At least learn to identify the snake before handling it. Corn snakes and king snakes are quite harmless. Copperheads? Not so much. Cottonmouths are real nasty, and aggressive to boot. We had one hiding behind a trashcan in our helicopter hanger when I was stationed at Ft Stewart. We grabbed it with a mechanical fingers device and tossed it out in the woodline. The next day, it was lurking right back behind the trash can next to our breakroom, so we ended up killing it since it was a serious hazard and had become territorial.

Red and Yellow, kill a fellow (coral snake)
Red and Black, don't kill Jack (king snake)

I learned this at camp, never had the opportunity to apply it in real life. I don't think I would stick around any snake long enough to observe what order are its color bands.

I remember someone once coming up behind me, tapping me on the shoulder, &, when I turned around, had a teeny snake right in my face! & had the nerve to try to chew me out when I yelled at him. Like I should have memorized "Field Guide to Snakes" & been able to tell at a millisecond's glance that it was "a harmless garden snake". That said, this woman was stupid, but she sure wasn't stupid enough to mistake it for a cat - let's be fair!

She thought she could pick it up and pet it!

There was a stupid redneck in my town who kept a lion in his backyard, because what else are you going to get to top a pitbull?

Everyone should know the snakes of their area. This side of the Pacific NW doesn't have any poisonous snakes.

(Of course, there are always dear friendly folk that like to keep poisonous snakes as pets, apparently on the idea that importing poisonous animals is somehow a good idea.)
